At the SXSW Festival in London, Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, revealed a new AI-powered email tool that can respond to messages in the user’s personal style and handle routine communication tasks automatically.

The innovation aims to reduce email overload and free users from time-consuming inbox management. Hassabis described it as part of a broader vision of artificial intelligence acting as a personal assistant that protects users’ attention and helps manage everyday tasks.

“While short-term expectations of AI may be exaggerated,” said Hassabis, “its long-term impact could be as transformative as the Industrial Revolution.”

During his talk, Hassabis also predicted that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) may arrive within 5 to 10 years. He emphasized the need for global cooperation—particularly between the U.S. and China—to safely manage AGI development.

He also called on economists and social scientists to analyze the socio-economic consequences of AI. According to Hassabis, responsible AI could drive “radical abundance” by solving large-scale problems in energy, productivity, and resource allocation—raising the need for fair distribution of future wealth.
