Meta announced a major restructuring of its AI division, splitting it into two units: AI Products and AGI Foundations. The first will focus on consumer-facing tools like chatbots and generative AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, while the second will work on long-term research in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
CTO Andrew Bosworth said the change allows better focus:
“This reorganization lets us build real products while continuing our investment in AGI breakthroughs.”
The move comes amid growing competition from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. Analysts describe it as a strategic separation between short-term product innovation and high-risk AGI development.
Meta has yet to reveal detailed plans but says the shift is already underway and may influence upcoming product rollouts. The split is also expected to help Meta meet new AI regulations in the U.S. and EU.
